Stockport
Stopford House
'Transforming a landmark building from liability to asset' was the broader objective of Stockport City Council as they prepared to redevelop brutalist building, Stopford House.
Fit-out specialists Overbury, once again called on the expert services of Harled to light up this imposing 100,000 sq. ft. 1960’s structure. As part of the council's ambition to move to a hybrid working model, Stopford House was fully reconfigured and redesigned under a 17.5 million project, as an open plan office that features break out areas and collaborative spaces across five floors.
Environmental impact and cost consideration where key drivers in this scheme. Low energy lighting, controlled via a sophisticated Building Management System was specified throughout, whilst components and fittings were not only sustainable but durable, providing longevity and added value.
A varied lighting specification provided definition in specific areas, creating clear identity and purpose. Challenges in lighting design across the ceiling space were met with the use of both track and linear lighting, each adjustable if required. A DALI dimmer system was specified allowing individual management and control of each light fixture through a 2-core lighting control circuit.
Upon completion, Stopford House was awarded the Best Corporate Workplace at the British Council Offices Awards where judges described the space as… "Inspiring, supportive of both work and wellbeing in a flexible, logical and well-designed scheme... Taking a strong sustainable stance, the Council decided to repurpose Stopford House rather than building new. The design team delivered a full workplace strategy enabling the Council to adopt hybrid working and vacate other premises for alternative services. The project has revolutionized the way in which Stockport Council works."
