Liverpool, The Spine
Royal College of Physicians
Harled was tasked to create the sensitive and thoughtful lighting design for, ‘The Spine’, the new Northern home of the College of Physicians, a ground breaking, environmentally driven project in the heart of Liverpool.
Set in the Knowledge Quarter, The Spine owes its name to the striking central staircase, which resembles the human vertebrae and connects 14 floors of offices, public areas, and spaces for events and conferences across 202,000 sq. ft. The Spine was built to be a beacon of excellence, bringing together local communities, improving the wellbeing of its occupants and placing wellbeing and sustainability at the core of the building's design.
In fact, the Spine has been built to achieve the highest standard of WELL, the premier standard for building, and has since been recognised as the healthiest building in the North West. The lighting scheme was to centre on these core values, uniting beautiful design and illumination with energy saving performance and innovative technology.
The Harled team collaborated with fit out specialists, Overbury, as well as world renowned architects, AHR. Ensuring complete and harmonious integration with the wider architectural vision and build ethos, the lighting design included a combination of linear lighting and downlight sheet lighting across the vast building.
The focus on wellness led to the use of a carefully selected lighting specification which worked seamlessly with the pouring natural light entering the building through huge glass windows and openings.
Bespoke fittings and components where introduced across the site, from small pods and offices, to the central living feature plant wall where low lights were added to emulate natural daylight. Low energy, high lumens per watt luminaires, with high efficacy, where specified alongside durable components, with every single element controlled by a sophisticated online Building Management System.
